“Unique” is possibly an over-used word in the English language but it would be impossible to describe the Hotel California without using it! The owners, Guido and Marina, have built a hotel based on their love of music and guests should understand that it plays a big part in the day to day running of their establishment.

Specifically mentioned in a number guide books and in recent Sunday Telegraph and Observer articles, the California has certainly caught the imagination of ski journalists! Each of the twelve bedrooms is designed around a different singer or band – John Denver, the Doors, Janis Joplin to name but a few. The Elvis Presley room for instance has a carved wooden bed-head in the shape of a Cadillac with indicators as bed-side lights! All of the furnishings are handmade and are of excellent quality. Many of the rooms have good views up or down the valley.

The hotel bar can be quite lively at weekends, especially on Friday and Saturday nights when the bar is popular with Champoluc residents, but much quieter during the week. There is occasional live music in the bar. Those who are very sensitive to noise might prefer to stay in another hotel.

The bar itself is styled like a cowboy saloon bar complete with pool table and darts board. MTV videos and sport is shown on a big screen in the bar. Guinness is served on draught. Evening meals are served on the mezzanine level above the bar.

Breakfast is served in a lounge downstairs.

Please note this hotel is offered on a bed and breakfast basis. Dinner is available in the hotel at weekends, or in one of the many nearby restaurants (payable locally).

The nightclub in the basement has now been closed for the past 3 years with no plans to re-open.

This was our second stay at The California, it was a lot busier this year, as usual the place is lovely and clean, the staff very helpful and the walk into Champoluc through the woods is lovely. We would love to re turn again next year.

The Hotel California is a very quirky hotel indeed! We were in the Janis Joplin room and although a little tired and basic, it was warm and clean and fine for our 4 night stay. We enjoyed the walk through the woods to the ski lift each morning although Ski2 were happy to collect and drop us off if we asked too!

The breakfast is quite basic but we enjoyed it and the coffee was lovely.

The bar was quite quiet whilst we were there, except on Wednesday evening when there was a karaoke which was quite lively – but if you’re looking for quietness then the bar is quite far from the rooms so shouldn’t cause any problems.

Overall we enjoyed our stay and will be returning to Champoluc again.

As has been said, the Hotel California is a bit quirky but it is very comfortable and great for a short skiing break. Very friendly staff – we discovered that using our limited French was the best way to communicate with the owner, who is fluent in French. We quite liked the walk to the ski lift in the morning as a good way to loosen up. And the hand towels may be a bit thin but the bath towels are just fine!

we really enjoyed our time here, we were away from the immediate village yet near enough for a 10 min walk, the woods outside were lovely, we loved it. very clean & tidy, & the owners quite enjoyed our very broken English / Italian chats. we will certainly go back.

Lovely clean, well looked after hotel, we enjoyed our weeks stay & will return if we can. The music was very quirky when you go into your room, quiet location but perfect for a brisk walk to ski2 in the mornings.

A first for me, having had the pleasure of staying in a few different hotels in Champoluc, was an over night in the California. I suppose the words that come into my head are quirky and friendly. With a large bar area having a meal with a huge TV playing Queen live at Wembley in the background was a little surreal as was opening the bedroom door and music from a western playing. Despite the paper thin towels the staff could not be more helpful and the woodland trail behind the hotel is a delight

2/2014- this is the second time we have stayed at The California and again we found the staff very friendly and helpful. Whilst the accommodation is a little quirky and the hotel a 10 minute walk out of the village the room rates offer good value and I suspect we will come back again soon…

Hotel is fine as a base; practical, clean and a nice location (although out of the village it is in reality no further than hotels at the other end of the village – and the Ski2 pick-up works very well). We always like eating out in Champoluc (Le Sapin, Churin (Pizzeria), Le Petit Coq, etc) which is good as I don’t think we’d want to spend much time in the hotel. Despite a big bar there seems little atmosphere and the musical bedrooms are a bit unusual! Nothing wrong with it though – just enjoy it for B&B.

Stayed again at the Hotel California for a second year. Hotel service is great with very helpful staff – although as mentioned English is not their first language so be prepared! It is a little walk from the centre but it can be a nice walk through a lit small forest path. As mentioned is what you would expect of a 3* B&B.

I really like the Hotel California. It is a little quirky but that is no bad thing. Rooms are warm and clean, service is friendly and efficient and food both breakfast and dinner are very pleasant and good value. Overall it is everything you expect from a 3* hotel. One even better if would be the quality of the towels – they are a little thin and could do with being thicker and softer. I have stayed twice and will be staying again in a couple of weeks.

Stayed at the Hotel California with my son in February 2013. Hotel was very quaint with lots of character (rooms are named after musical figures). Rooms were comfortable. Staff were very helpful, although their English is not the strongest – was always able to get my message across though!
Was about a 10 minute walk from the centre and ski lifts – although a pleasant woodland trail kept you away from the road.
Some comments did describe it as lively and loud at times – we experienced none of this – although we were the week before the main half term.

We had a very nice stay at the Hotel California. It is not luxury, but more than adequate. It has spacious, and eccentric!, rooms which were pleasant and quiet although slightly dated. We enjoyed our daily walk through the woods to the gondola and main village. In the evenings, Ski 2 ferried us about in their mini-bus which was particularly useful after dinner when the children were tired. I particularly liked having the option of B & B, so we ate out at a different restaurant every night. Le Petit Coq next door was particularly good, and also La Grange up the valley at Frachey.

  13. Robert and Janet Ward on

We had a comfortable stay at the Hotel California in February 2013 and enjoyed the walk across the park to the lift each morning. The hotel staff were most obliging and helpful although the bar and restaurant are a bit large and impersonal. We ate out most evenings as the hotel ran a number of ‘karaoke discos’ for outside school groups during half-term.
